BREAST AND CHEST DEFORMITIES

Dr Vincent Nguyen is a French board-certified plastic surgeon expert and referent in breast and chest deformities.

Breast and chest deformity treatments may be considered as esthetic or reconstructive surgeries.

LES INTERVENTIONS POUR LES MALFORMATIONS MAMMAIRES ET DU THORAX

Poland syndrome

Congenital syndrome, characterized by mammary gland aplasia or hypoplasia, small nipple-areola complex, often associated with underdeveloped or absence of chest muscles and short ribs.

Sunken chest or pectus excavatum

This is a chest congenital disorder that causes the chest to have a sunken appearance. It may be corrected with a silicone implant, or lipofilling if the patient has enough fat stock. Sometimes both techniques may be combined.

Tuberous breasts

Happens during development process, breast tissue doesn’t grow normally. Breasts lack in tissue at their base.

OTHER DEFINITIONS OF BREAST AND CHEST DEFORMITIES

  • In breast and chest reconstructive surgery many deformities may be congenital (hereditary or genetic), due to a trauma (burns, accidents) or may occur with no known cause.
  • There are 3 main types of deformities: with or without mammary gland, with or without associated chest deformity, and abnormalities of the nipple-areola complex.
  • There are also chest deformities that may be mistaken for a breast deformity or breast asymmetry.

Breast asymmetry

Common condition, characterized by a difference in size, shape, position and areola between the two breasts.

Breast hypoplasia or mammary hypotrophy

Sometimes due to breast agenesis that can be fixed with breast implants or breast lipofilling.

Mammary hypertrophy

Very common condition. The breasts are too large and heavy, resulting in esthetic and functional discomfort. Easily and satisfactorily corrected with breast reduction.

Deformities due to accident in childhood (burns, injuries, after cancer treatment with radiation or surgery)

  • Treatment of chest wall and breast deformities depend on the patients condition. Patients may benefit from conventional esthetic surgery techniques (breast remodeling, breast implant procedure, liposuction) when there is enough skin or volume, others need special custom-made sternal or breast implants, microsurgery or skin grafting techniques.
  • All these conditions require the expertise of a competent board-certified plastic surgeon expert in breast and chest deformity procedures.
